On May 27th, 2011, La Hermandad Mexicana Nacional- an organization that has dedicated itself to helping the Latino community within the U.S. and Latino immigrants throughout the nation for over 50 years- will be honoring the life and legacy of its founder, Bert Corona.
Born in 1918 to immigrant parents in El Paso, Texas and inspired by his father’s involvement in the Mexican Revolution, Corona dedicated his life to obtaining economic and social justice for the Latino community. One of his prime achievements was undoubtedly La Hermandad Mexicana Nacional (HMN).
HMN is the nation’s largest Latino immigrant’s organization, with over 30,000 member families across the U.S. Founded in San Diego, California in 1951, HMN is a non-profit mutual-aid organization that merges the strong family values and long-standing tradition of volunteerism found within Latino culture.
The ceremony will be comprised of Monica Garcia, president of LAUSD, awarding the Continue the Vision Award to a selected member and recognition of three citizenship teachers who have worked tirelessly to help permanent residents prepare for their citizenship interview. Students who have participated in the Youth Technology Project located in Colonia Corona will also be receiving recognition, in addition to those students who have passed their citizenship interview.
The ceremony shall commence at 6:00 pm at the Hilton Hotel located in Universal City.
